On June 18th, 2025, Hurricane Erick underwent extremely rapid intensification in the East Pacific Ocean, going from a 60 mph Tropical Storm to a 145 mph Category 4 Hurricane in only 24 hours. Several hours later, at dawn on June 19th, Erick made landfall in western Oaxaca, Mexico at a slightly weakened intensity, killing 23 and causing $204 million in damages.
Erick broke numerous meteorological records, including:
- The earliest 5th named storm on record in the East Pacific.
- The earliest Major Hurricane, either in the Pacific or the Atlantic, to make landfall in Mexico.
- The easternmost and southernmost landfalling Pacific Hurricane.
- The first Major Hurricane to make landfall in the state of Oaxaca.
- And the 3rd Major Pacific Hurricane to make landfall in southern Mexico in a 19-month timeframe, following John (2024) and Otis (2023).
